Novelista, periodista, sociólogo e historiador inglés. Mientras estudiaba ciencias bajo la supervisión de T.H. Huxley en Londres, Wells formuló una concepción romántica del sujeto que inspiraría sus inventivas e influyentes novelas de ciencia ficción y fantasía, por las que es principalmente conocido, y entre las que figuran la celebérrima
La máquina del tiempo (
1895),
El hombre invisible (1897) y
La guerra de los mundos (1898). Simultáneamente, desempeñó un papel como promotor de causas progresistas, entre ellas la de la
Sociedad de Naciones. Más tarde abandonó la
ciencia ficción y recurrió a sus recuerdos de infancia en el seno de una familia de clase media baja para escribir las novelas
Tono-Bungay (1908) y, en clave cómica,
La historia del Sr. Polly (
1910). Wells mantuvo un romance con la joven Rebecca West durante diez años. La primera guerra mundial remeció su fe en el progreso de la humanidad, y lo llevó a promover la educación popular a través de ensayos históricos o políticos, entre los que se cuentan
